A colleague at work is a fellow photog, and also a keen member of the local Airsoft community. I had seen some of his photos and asked if I would be allowed to come along the next event they had. That was at Easter, and I got to go along for a morning on Day 2 of their 3 day event.
I had a lot of fun, and they kindly provided an escort to make sure I didn’t get shot (too often) or get in the way. He was also a keen photog and was very concious of the potential damage to equipment, which was helpful. The pellets are small, and sting a bit on bare skin, but could certainly do damage with a direct hit onto a lens or a plastic body.
We did lots of walking, and stalking. There was lots of shouting and running and tactics and strategy and tension and adrenaline. I could certainly see the appeal.
Here are some of my favourites for the day – the rest are up on my Zenfolio site
I learnt a lot shooting these, the light was difficult with areas of bright light and shade. I was shooting with my 70-200 F4 IS to give me good shots with the ability to keep out of firing range. I was quite frustrated at times, it was the first time I ever felt the need for a second body with probably my 50mm F1.8 for the times I wanted the closeups. Next time (hopefully there will be one) I will set my camera to a fast shutterspeed in the hope I get more sharp shots. In the heat of battle I didn’t always have time to be as steady as I needed while being handheld, and there were a few just a bit blurry as a result.
