Jan One Four Challenge – Wk 3

BW version this week – click to embiggen

YAY my PC is back and very fast at some things, such a relief!Β  So here is my entry for Week 3 of the Jan One Four Challenge (click on the link for details if you are new to the Challenge)

Post Processing Steps:

– Open base image up in Nik Silver Efex and twiddle with lots of presets
– Pick underexposed because I like the dark tones and the detail it adds to the head and the eye
– Bring the brightness up a bit as it was too dark

Wallah!

Again it feels a bit too simple and quick but I have something special planned for next week πŸ™‚

As always comments, tips, tricks and suggestions welcome!

Nice monochrome version! I am just in love with this whole picture πŸ™‚

    • lensaddiction says:

Thanks Sari, he has been a bit more of a challenge to edit, but it has been a good learning experience. I have some surprises in store for next week πŸ™‚

  2. Lovely monochrome. I checked out the other photos. Great job. πŸ˜€

  3. Jen says:

    Very cool photo!
And I’m so glad your PC is back again πŸ˜€

    • lensaddiction says:

Yes and now it’s broken again 😒

      • Jen says:

        You’re KIDDING?!?
Oh geesh. I’m so sorry. 😦

      • lensaddiction says:

Nope wiped the c drives clean by the looks of things

      • Jen says:

        Wow. That’s scary.

And it reminds me that I need to back up everything. Which I will do as soon as the next post is done!

      • lensaddiction says:

Yes it’s not a matter of if your hard drive will fail but WHEN

      • Jen says:

Yeah … I know what you mean.
Mine crashed once before — wiped out the C: drive but the D: was safe. Thankfully. Still lost a lot though. I save all my writing and photos on the D: drive but don’t entirely trust it — hence an external backup too. ‘Cause you never know …..!

      • lensaddiction says:

I have a raided pair for both my c and d drives and another pair in my NAS and external backup

      • Jen says:

        Good idea.
Scary how FAST the crash can happen too. o.O

      • lensaddiction says:

Yes I work in IT and completely understand!

      • Jen says:

        Ahhhh…. I see ….!

      • Jen says:

And don’t forget to back up your “favorites’ too. I do a lot of research for my posts and losing all those research links was a nightmare too. 😦

      • lensaddiction says:

Yes I learned that the hard way too, I use Firefox and thunderbird as my main programs for browsing and email. They allow you to store your profiles somewhere easy to find and backup and it has all your info in them ie all emails and favourites etc. really easy to restore and quick too

      • Jen says:

For some reason Firefox doesn’t work so well on my computer — so I’m stuck with Chrome — but getting better at remembering to back things up. Have started to use dropbox too —

But few things are more AGGRAVATING than starting over with a “wiped” computer and having to reset all those settings.

Love the monotone, it brings out the catch light in his/her eye.

  5. Beautiful, great use of Silver Efex. I really like the contrast and how it separates the duckling from the background.

    • lensaddiction says:

Appreciate the comment Ben, I did actually spend AGES deciding which preset to start with, and was reluctant to use this one as it was a darker process but in the end liked its output the most

  6. Robyn G says:

Quick and gorgeous Stacey!! He is a beautiful subject. Looking forward to your surprise next week πŸ˜ƒ

  7. Bastet says:

He’s a beauty! Really like this monochrome take. And so happy for you that you’ve got your computer back! Can’s wait to see next week’s process!

  8. Anita says:

Looks like you’re beginning to like dark, Stacey! πŸ™‚ I love this monochrome.
Hope your PC and backup situation are better now.

  9. It will be very hard to pick my favorite this month. So gorgeous…

Love to hear your thoughts on my post!
